Wootton Wawen basin

The Anglo Welsh company's basin at Wootton Wawen.  Even many English people think this village's name is odd -- we asked a local to pronounce it for us, and heard "W'TT'n WOHw'n" or perhaps "WUTTen WOHwen", the second part rhyming with rowan like the tree -- for IPA wonks like us, Wikipedia gives this as /ˈwʊtən ˈwoʊ.ən/.

The name means "farm near a wood, belonging to Wagen", where "Wagen" or "Waga" is an Old Norse name.  It is actually known who Waga was, since he was one of the witnesses to the foundation of the monastery at Coventry by Earl Leofric in 1042.
